Looking for a deal?

I love a bargain, and since everything has pretty much doubled in price in the past 5 years, I'm always looking to spend less money, especially on groceries. I thought I would share a couple of things that I have learned in the past few days.

About six months ago, I stopped doing the bulk of my grocery shopping at Wal-mart, and I started shopping at Macey's . At first, I thought this would mean I would be spending more money, after all, Wal-mart has the lowest prices in town right?

Well, come to find out, yes, they do have low every day prices, but how often do they have sales like the regular grocery stores do? (I have seen things on sale occasionally, but not very often)Yes, they will match ad prices on everything, but with three small children, I found that I would usually forget to tell the cashier to change the price, and it actually made my grocery trip more stressful that it needed to be. (Everyone is different, this is just how I felt)

So, I still go to Wal-mart for a few things, like Sugar Free maple syrup, which is only $1.48 at Wal-mart, but it is $2.99 at Macey's, for a bottle half of the size. I usually buy what is on sale at Macey's and plan my weekly menu around that, and then go to Wal-mart a couple of times of month.

This week, I found something really cool at Macey's. If you go to the website, http://www.mywesternfamily.com/, (you can also access it from Macey's website)and watch a cheesy two and a half minute film, you can get a coupon for a free item. Last week it was a can of WF green beans. Now, that is .55 cents that I don't have to spend, and it builds up our food storage one can at a time!
One thing I love about shopping at Macey's is that it is a smaller store, and I can always find someone to help me. I also now know most of the cashiers by sight, and they give my kids smarties!

The second thing I found is this little produce store called Eagle Eye Produce over on Gordon Ave, not too far from where we live. I don't go very often, because it's a hard place to go with three small children. Today, I went, with only I-girl, and I bought the following for less than $14.00:

a watermelon, (.25 cents a pound)

a cantaloupe, (.39 cents a pound)

a 10 pound bag of potatoes (only a $1.99, at Macey's, they are $4.99!),

8 gala apples (1.19 a pound),

and 2 oranges (.99 cents a pound)

Most of these prices you can find at a grocery store, when the items are on sale, but it's nice to know this store is available to find these prices all of the time! I will be frequenting this store at least weekly, especially since apples are close to $2.00 pound at Macey's right now.

I'm always looking for a bargain, so if you hear anything let me know! I would also love to hear if you have any other money saving tips to share. Things are tight, but I'm finding that there are always ways to cut back and save a little bit of money.

so good to know! I'm a major deal-day shopper, so I appreciate tips like these. I am trying to be a more dedicated coupon shopper, but I'm not doing very well yet. Have you heard of Pinchingyourpennies.com. they always have good tips on deals.

Fun. You are so good, so much more domestic than me. I should take lessons. :) I do the best I can, but like you said with 3 kids...
I wish we could buy the house next to you, but Rick doesn't want to live that far north. Carlyn & Darren have asthma too. C wasn't too bad, but D really went through a rough period. When they have a cold or cough its the worst. Seems to be triggered for them from that or allergies. Sorry you are going through that too. That's rough. If you need an ear to listen to, I'm here.
