San Diego - Day 3

This day turned out nothing like we had planned, but it was still a great day. This was the plan for the day: get up and go for a run on the beach, come back and get ready, Mike would leave for training, I would stay at the hotel and wait for my sister to pick me up. She was driving from Palm Springs that morning to stay until Sunday. My mom and my sister-in-law would be flying in from Utah and staying until Sunday also. Their plane was to land at 10:30, so Bonnie, (my sister) would pick me up and then we would pick my mom and sister-in-law up from the airport.

So, this is what actually happened that day: Mike and I did get up and go running on the beach. The sun had just risen and it was gorgeous! There were several shells that had washed up on the beach the night before. Both of us had our hands full by the time we were finished. It is one of those moments in life that you don't want to end because it's just about perfect.

After getting back to the hotel, cleaning up and eating breakfast, I went back to our hotel room to wait for my sister to get there. I called her to see where she was and then I called my mom to see if she answered, or if their flight had taken off on time. I was surprised when she answered because I thought they would be on the plane. She told me that their plane had been delayed, and they were not sure when they would be taking off. At this point, I went back to reading on the balcony, watching the ocean (like I said, this whole trip was an absolute dream come true, and I savored every single moment because I don't know if it will ever happen again!) I had also called home to see how everything was there. Mike's mom was watching the kids that day. Not too long after I had hung up with my mother in law, she called me back and told me that Mike's dad had a heart attack the night before, in the middle of the night, and was in the hospital. Amazingly enough, he drove himself there. So, I quickly called my Relief Society President, who also happens to be a really good friend. She was at our house 20 minutes later to watch the kids so my mother in law could leave to be with my father in law. My father in law was released from the hospital the next day, and is doing very well. He is such a great man, that I love so much, and I'm so glad this heart attack has not as bad as it could have been. There are two things that I was really grateful for at this moment, amazing neighbors that are willing to step in at a moments notice to help, and cell phones. In a matter of minutes, we had all of the help we needed and Mike's mom was able to leave to go and be with Mike's dad.

After that, I called my mom to tell her what happened. At this point, their plane had been delayed 2 1/2 hours, so they cancelled their flight and found a ride to our house. My mom stayed with our kids until Mike arrived home that night on his scheduled flight. It was a crazy morning, and was hard to be away from the kids knowing what was going on at home, but it all worked out for the best. Mike tried to get on an earlier flight home, but there was not anything else that could get him home any quicker than his flight would at 11:30p.m.

After my sister picked me up, we checked in to our hotel in downtown San Diego. Mike was already there because he was finished with class for the day, so we went to Old Town for lunch and ate really good Mexican food. I really liked it there.

It was funny standing in front of a nativity in a short sleeve shirt. I'm used to being in a coat and freezing. The weather was in the mid-70's the whole time we were there.

This is my sister, Bonnie & I.

After Old Town, we went to Balboa Park.

This was the Botanical Garden. It was so beautiful.

They had a banana tree inside. It was fun to see how they grow.

The "Bird of Paradise" flowers were in full bloom while we were there. They are so pretty.

After we dropped Mike off at the airport, we went back to the hotel. Then we decided to go see the new "Twilight" movie downtown. I was trying to remember where we ate dinner that night, and then I remembered that our dinner was the popcorn and drinks at the movie theatre. It was a good show, and I enjoyed it. I have read the first three books, and I chose not to read the fourth one because of my own personal reasons. After the movie, we walked back to the hotel and were in bed by 10:30, wow are we getting old!

Wow, sounds like a fun and crazy trip. I'm so sorry about your father in law. I hope he's okay. I'm glad you got to enjoy your trip, even though it was a little crazy. Sounds like you had a great time to me.
