Easy Bake Oven Fun

So, it turns out the Easy Bake Oven that Scotlyn wanted so bad for Christmas this year, was not so easy for this mom to figure out! My sister had one when I was little, but my mom said it never did work right. I was afraid that it would be the same case with Scotlyn's oven. First of all, Santa did not bring a special light bulb, which it needs in order to work. (I always wondered how it worked). Next year, we need to remember to check and make sure we have batteries, and light bulbs, if needed. The two things that Scotlyn requested, the oven and a digital camera, and we did not have what we needed in order for either one of those to work!

Here is a picture I took on one of our trial runs a few days ago.

This is how it turned out. The cake batter spilled all over the oven, and made a big mess. We used the store bought mixes, that are made especially for the Easy Bake Oven the first two times. The kids still ate it and thought it was yummy.

When Scotlyn had a friend over the other day, she wanted to try it again, but we were out of the mixes. So, I googled "homemade easy bake oven mixes", and with the magic of the Internet (honestly, I don't know what I ever did before the Internet), volia, there were several recipes for mixes. All it took was 3 Tablespoons of a cake mix, with 1 Tablespoon of water. It was the best success we had! The cakes turned out great!

No spills, no mess in the oven at all. Here are the girls with their final products. I'm sure there is at least enough cake mix for 20 more cakes like this. That should keep us busy for a few weeks!
