St. George Triathlon

In May, Mike and I went to St. George and did the St. George Triathlon. It was so much fun. I was a little nervous about the open water swim. This is the first time I swam in open water. The water was really cold, even though I had a wet suit on. It was not until the final few yards that I was even able to put my head in the water. There were several women in my heat that were holding onto the boats. During the entire swim, I just kept thinking "Just don't stop, and it will be fine". I finished the swim portion in about 23 minutes. Mike did the swim without a wet suit. AMAZING! He was really cold though. His heat started 20 minutes before mine did, and I was so grateful when I saw him on the bike, because I did not know if he made it though the swim or not. After the swim, I felt so dizzy, and nauseous. I almost stopped at this point, but I took my time in transition (about 7 minutes) and ate a power bar, then I felt like I could actually ride my bike and not fall off. Mike said he felt the same way coming out of the water. In talking to a friend of mine who has done several triathlons, he said it was because of the water temperature, and the fact that we were not used to swimming in open water.

The bike ride was so beautiful. It went around Sand Hollow Reservoir. I looked around several times during the ride, just to admire the scenery. There was a really tough hill on the bike that lasted for at least 3 miles, or that is what it felt like. It was almost more nerve racking coming down the hill on the bike ride. The hill was pretty steep. Mike and I passed each other coming out of transition to the run portion, and ran most of the way together. We finished at the same time, which was so great. I don't have any pictures of us racing, but here are a few other pictures that were taken. My sister and her family came from Palm Springs. She did the race also, even on her birthday. She did the Olympic distance and did amazing!

I took this just before it was time for us to swim. The weather could not have been more perfect.

My parents also came down with us. It was so much fun, and there is talk about making this a family tradition. Scotlyn and Ivy stayed with Mike's sister that weekend, so we just had Mason with us.

We finished!

We stopped and ate at a Chinese Buffet on the way home. Mason loved these chicken kabobs.

At the restaurant, we talked to some men who were in the area filming a movie. Mason loved their big rig, and they let us take a photo of him in front of it.

This is Mason with his post "napping in the car on the way home from St. George" hairdo.
